A Warm Welcome & What to Expect in Our First Session
Hello, this is Cheryl.
If you’re reading this, it probably means you or someone you love is going through a difficult time. You might be tired, stuck, or unsure about the next step. I want you to know—you don’t have to go through this alone. It’s okay to reach out before you have it all figured out.
Finding the right therapist can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already carrying so much. I encourage you to speak with the therapists you’ve shortlisted and notice how you feel in those first conversations. The right fit matters—it’s about feeling safe, understood, and respected.
Before our first session, I’d like to share with you what to expect and how we’ll get started.
Before we meet
To make our first session as meaningful as possible, I’ll invite you to complete an intake form, a few assessment questionnaires, and to read through an informed consent document. These help me understand your background, current concerns, and any important mental health, cultural, or medical factors.
Some of these assessments can be a little lengthy, and that’s okay—you’re welcome to take your time completing them. If at any point you can’t finish them or need extra time, just let me know. There are no right or wrong answers—this is simply a way for me to get to know you and your story before we meet.
Our First Meet
We’ll begin with a gentle, open conversation about your experiences—what’s been happening, what’s hurting, and what you’d like to change. This isn’t about putting you into a box. It’s about starting with understanding, so we can work in a way that feels right for you.
My approach
I believe everyone has an innate capacity to heal when supported by a safe, empathetic connection. My main approaches are Emotion-Focused Therapy and Multigenerational Family Therapy, though I may also draw on other techniques if they will serve you better at a particular stage. My role is to help you transform unresolved pain into deeper connection—with yourself and others.
What to expect
Therapy isn’t a quick fix—it’s a process. There may be lighter moments and heavier ones, but over time, small shifts can lead to powerful, lasting changes. Sometimes, you might even be the first person in your family to break a cycle that has been passed down for generations.

About Cheryl
Cheryl Chin Yi Fen has spent her career walking alongside individuals, couples, and families in moments of pain, change, and growth. Known for her clinical competence, maturity, and compassion despite her younger age, she has earned the trust of clients across the country. Over the years, her deep attunement and steady presence have led to a consistently high caseload — built not through marketing, but through the quiet recommendations of those she has helped.
Her journey began with a Bachelor of Psychology (UK) and a Master’s in Counselling, but her passion for systemic work led her further. Cheryl is among only nine therapists in Malaysia to complete advanced training with world-renowned master family therapist Prof. Dr. Maurizio Andolfi at the Accademia di Psicoterapia Familiare in Rome, Italy. She has also completed all core trainings in Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) and continues under the direct supervision of EFT’s creator, Prof. Leslie Greenberg, in Canada.
Her work is grounded in the belief that emotional and relational health cannot be built in isolation. Whether in a therapy room or a family living room, Cheryl helps couples, parents, and family members learn to attune to each other’s needs, respond with kindness, and transform how they relate. She also leads collaborative work in separation and divorce cases, guided by the conviction that a breakdown in marriage does not have to mean the breakdown of a family.
Cheryl has served as an EXCO member (2021-2025) of the Malaysian Marriage and Family Therapy Association, receiving recognition for her contribution and leadership as the Honorary Secretary. She leads therapy teams in private centres in the Klang Valley, and her dedication to community wellbeing extends beyond therapy — since 2020, her talks and workshops on mental, emotional, and relational health have reached over 3,000 participants in corporate and non-profit spaces.
She now serves as Clinical Director at Safe Space Psychology Centre and Project Director at the Andolfi Family Therapy Centre, where she continues to bring heart, skill, and vision to her work.
